Day 1: Tsavorite Mining Experience – Lemshuku

Your expedition begins with pickup from your hotel and a scenic drive to Lemshuku, one of Tanzania’s known Tsavorite-producing areas. The journey takes approximately two to three hours, passing through beautiful rural landscapes, with a stop at the picturesque Lake Kidawashi.

Upon arrival in Lemshuku, discover the fascinating world of Tsavorite, a distinctive green variety of garnet. Learn about its geological formation, discovery, and importance in the international gemstone market. Your guide will introduce you to local mining practices, the tools used to extract gemstones, and the role of mining in supporting the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

Continue to selected mining sites to observe local mining activities and gain a closer understanding of how Tsavorite is recovered from the earth. Subject to mine access, safety conditions, and authorization, you will have the opportunity to descend into an underground mine with appropriate safety equipment and guidance. This experience provides a closer look at the geological formations and working conditions associated with artisanal gemstone mining.

After the mining activities, enjoy lunch and some time to relax amid the peaceful surroundings of Lemshuku. Later, transfer to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Tanzanite Mining Experience – Mererani

After breakfast, depart for the renowned Mererani Tanzanite mining area in northern Tanzania. Tanzanite is an exceptionally rare gemstone, with its commercially significant deposits famously associated with this region.

Upon arrival, explore the mining area and learn about the history of Tanzanite discovery, the different mining blocks, and the geological conditions that make this gemstone so distinctive. Through local guidance and authorized visits, gain insight into the mining operations and the challenges involved in extracting Tanzanite from deep underground deposits.

Where access and safety permissions allow, visit an underground mining site to learn about the rock formations, extraction techniques, and equipment used by miners. Discover the different stages involved in recovering Tanzanite-bearing material and understand how the gemstone progresses from the mine toward the market.

Following the mining experience, enjoy lunch and refreshments before beginning the return journey to your hotel. Your two-day expedition concludes with a deeper appreciation of Tanzania’s gemstone wealth and the people involved in bringing these remarkable minerals to the world.
