On Arrival: Kilimanjaro International Airport – Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Tanzania Gem Ventures representative who will accompany you throughout your expedition. After a brief introduction to the itinerary and essential travel information, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Moshi.

Enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening before beginning your gemstone adventure the following day.

Day 1: Moshi – Tanga

After breakfast, depart Moshi and travel towards Tanga through the scenic landscapes of northeastern Tanzania. Along the way, enjoy views of the countryside and surrounding natural environment as you approach the coastal region.

Upon arrival in Tanga, check in at your accommodation and take some time to relax. Depending on your arrival time and the day’s arrangements, you may enjoy a brief introduction to the region and its significance within Tanzania’s mineral-producing areas.

Day 2: Tanga – Umba Valley Sapphire Mining Experience

After an early breakfast, depart for the Umba Valley for a full day of gemstone exploration. The region is known for its sapphire deposits and artisanal mining activities, offering a valuable opportunity to understand how local miners search for and recover these precious stones.

Visit selected artisanal mining sites, where you will learn about the geological conditions associated with sapphire deposits, traditional extraction methods, and the tools used by local miners. You will also have opportunities to interact with miners, hear about their experiences, and gain insight into the challenges and opportunities within the local gemstone industry.

Throughout the day, explore the surrounding landscape and discover how sapphire mining contributes to the livelihoods of communities in the Umba Valley. The experience offers a closer look at the journey of sapphires from the ground towards the gemstone market.

A packed lunch will be provided during the excursion. In the evening, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Umba Valley – Final Mining Visits – Return to Moshi

This final visit provides additional opportunities to observe local mining practices, learn about the geological diversity of the area, and deepen your understanding of sapphire sourcing in Tanzania.

After completing the planned activities, enjoy your packed lunch before beginning the return journey to Moshi in the early afternoon. Arrive in the evening and transfer to your hotel for a final overnight stay or onward travel, depending on your arrangements.

Your three-day expedition concludes with a deeper appreciation of Tanzania’s sapphire resources, artisanal mining traditions, and local gemstone trade.
