On Arrival: Kilimanjaro International Airport – Moshi or Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Tanzania Gem Ventures representative, who will accompany you throughout your expedition. After a brief introduction to the itinerary and travel arrangements, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha, depending on your confirmed booking.

Day 1: Tourmaline Mining Experience – Landanai

Begin your expedition with an early morning departure for Landanai, a region associated with Tanzania’s Tourmaline deposits. The journey from Arusha takes approximately four hours, depending on road conditions and the exact mining locations visited.

Explore selected mining areas around Lorbene and Naberera, where Tourmaline and other minerals may be found. With guidance from local experts, learn about the geological conditions in which Tourmaline forms, particularly in pegmatite deposits, and discover the range of colours that makes this gemstone popular among collectors and jewellery manufacturers.

During the visit, gain insight into artisanal mining methods, the tools used to recover gemstone-bearing material, and the experiences of local miners. This is an opportunity to understand the practical challenges of gemstone extraction and the role of mining in the surrounding communities.

After lunch, continue exploring the selected mining locations before beginning the return journey to Arusha. Arrive in the evening and settle into your accommodation.

Day 2: Tsavorite Mining Experience – Lemshuku

After breakfast, depart for Lemshuku, a gemstone-producing area associated with Tsavorite, the vivid green variety of garnet valued in the international gemstone market. The drive takes approximately two to three hours, depending on the route and conditions.

Upon arrival, learn about the geological formation and discovery of Tsavorite, its distinctive colour, and its significance in Tanzania’s gemstone industry. Visit selected mining sites to observe local mining activities and understand the methods used to identify and extract gemstone-bearing rocks.

Where access is authorized, you may have the opportunity to descend into an underground Tsavorite mine. With appropriate safety arrangements and guidance, learn about underground geological formations, mining equipment, and the techniques used by artisanal miners.

Interact with local miners to gain a better understanding of their working practices and the role of Tsavorite mining in the local economy. After lunch, enjoy time to appreciate the surrounding landscape before returning to your accommodation.

Day 3: Tanzanite Mining Experience – Mererani

After breakfast, travel to the famous Mererani Tanzanite mining area in northern Tanzania, internationally recognized for its Tanzanite deposits.

Begin with an introduction to the history and discovery of Tanzanite, its geological formation, and its importance in the global gemstone market. Explore the mining area and learn about the different mining blocks, their characteristics, and the operations involved in recovering this rare blue-violet gemstone.

Subject to mine-owner permission and safety conditions, visit an underground mining site to learn about the rock formations, extraction techniques, and equipment used by miners. Gain insight into the stages involved in recovering Tanzanite-bearing material and how rough stones are subsequently sorted, evaluated, and prepared for further processing and trade.

You will also have the opportunity to interact with local mining professionals and learn about the challenges involved in extracting Tanzanite from underground deposits.

After lunch, return to your accommodation for a relaxing evening.

Day 4: Arusha Gemstone Market & Mineral Trading Experience

On the final day, explore Arusha’s gemstone market and selected gemstone dealers, discovering the variety of minerals sourced from Tanzania and neighbouring regions.

The market visit may include Tanzanite, Tsavorite, Tourmaline, Spinel, Sapphire, Garnet, and other precious and semiprecious gemstones, depending on current availability. Meet local traders and learn about the gemstone supply chain, including how rough and cut stones are presented, evaluated, and prepared for sale.

Depending on availability and your interests, additional visits may be arranged to gemstone showrooms, cutting workshops, or polishing facilities to learn more about gemstone identification, quality assessment, cutting, and finishing.

Guests interested in purchasing gemstones can explore available stones and discuss buying options with local dealers. All purchases are optional and subject to the seller’s terms.

After completing the market experience, transfer to your hotel, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or another agreed drop-off point, depending on your onward travel arrangements.
